An American Haunting tells of the supposedly true story about the haunting of the Bell family from Tennessee way back in the early 1800's. John Bell (Donald Sutherland) charges a certain Kathe Batts, also known as a witch, an outlandish interest rate 20% on some kind of put up land deal. She gets really angry and curses him and his family in the courtroom, in particularly his daughter, Betsy. After these events, a presence visits the Bell house and spends a lot of time smacking and dragging Betsy Bell all over the place. The presence takes it easy on her for awhile and works on John Bell, creating in him a nasty tuberculosis type cough that brings up blood. All throughout the family tries to find out what the entity wants but it never answers. The school teacher and family Pastor are helpless to solve or stop it. The school teacher's "rationale explanation for these happenings" and the Pastor's "constant preaching" to drive the demon out seems to have no power here (typical for Hollywood, lol!). Lacking any explanation, this would make this entity one mean mother of a ghost, no?!?! I'm not sure if this movie actually follows the events of the story of the Bells, but the ending of the film was not what I expected, however, I will let you draw your own conclusions!
