Burnt Offerings can best be compared to the movie Christine, you know, the movie about the possessed 58' Fury that was taken from the popular book by Stephen King. In this case, however, an old house is the possessed instrument. The house is actually a vampire that feeds off of the new caretakers; the Rolf family. Ben, Marian, son David, and Aunt Elizabeth (played here by the classic Bette Davis!) come to the house to meet the weird and eccentric Allardyces, Arnold and Roz. When the Allardyces convince the family that it will only cost them $900.00 for the entire season, they jump at it.
Funny things start to happen to the Rolfs, however. Ben almost drowns son David in the pool; Marian is spending more and more time with old Mrs. Allardyce that stays in the uppermost room and gets her meals on a tray three times a day. Marian's hair is getting grayer the longer they stay. Another attempt on David's life happens in his room as the gas valve for the heater is wide open, spilling death into the room. Poor Ben, who's been suspicious of the house from the beginning, gets shredded by a bunch of trees as he attempts to escape the evil of the house! He realizes that the place won't let them leave and what's more, the place seems to be renewing itself with each tragic incident that happens to them! If he could only get Marian to leave, they might make it. Expect a surprise at the end of this film!!
