Coffin Joe has made a mark on me I just can't forget. Forget about the fact that I wasn't even born when Joe's first movie came out in 1964. (I was born in 1965!) Yes, the first movie, At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, is old, in B & W, and subtitled but that doesn't matter. There wasn't a lot of blood or extreme gore either. What I did like about the Coffin Joe character was the extreme way in which he viewed mortality and the way he treated others. Well, I didn't like that stuff because I'm not like that, but I had to smile at what the movie was portraying. Joe's an undertaker in a small town who's sick of the status quo. He wants to start charging double when people die. He's also got a huge desire for a son, but the woman he's with now, Lenita, can't have children. Joe despises her, so he kills her with a tarantula. The woman he has his eyes on is his best friends (Antonio) girl, Terezinha. Coffin Joe walks her home, tries to kiss her, but she bites his lip. He swears he'll have her, so he clubs Antonio over the head and then drags him to the bathtub and drowns him. What a friend! Joe is deliciously against God, against the community's religious observances, terrorizes bar patrons with the threat of measuring them for a new coffin, and this after beating some senseless with a whip, plays violent poker by shearing off a dude's fingers with a broken bottle when the guy won't pay up, and pisses off the local fortune teller who predicts doom for Coffin Joe because of his many sins. Joe laughs it off though, with predictable results. This movie is excellent with a six pack of your favorite beverage anytime or on a Halloween night party. Prepare to smile, laugh, and marvel at the perverseness of Joe, and love him for it!
