Dead And Buried really surprised me. It was a great horror film that had gore in it, yes, but also a very good mystery story. James Farentino stars as a small town Sheriff in a sleepy little sea front town called Potters Bluff. He’s a married man with a good life, respect from the locals; nothing really happens in Potters Bluff…until recently. A string of unsolved murders are haunting the Sheriff. It seems that all of the murders, harpooning, burning, stabbing, etc., are happening to complete strangers that just happen to pass through or stop for directions! The Sheriff’s wife Janet is so caught up with her life that she is all but pooh-poohing the problems he’s having figuring this all out. The local coroner, Dobbs, is no help. All he seems to be possessed with is his big band music and making the victims look great before the box goes into the hole. He’s not helping the Sheriff make determinations relating to causes of death or conditions of the bodies. One clue gets the Sheriff suspicious and that’s when he visits his wife at school as she is teaching the kids about zombies and the dark arts. He overhears her, without her knowing. Things spiral out of control for the Sheriff after that as some fundamental truths sink in. Of course, his poor mind can’t handle it!! Farentino does an excellent job portraying a man driven to insanity. You’ll see a young Robert Englund (Elm Street Freddy!) in a bit role here. Stan Winston did the make-up effects on this film as he did in the films The Monster Squad, Aliens, Predator, Darkness Falls, among many, many others! Lastly, Mr. Dan O’Bannon did the screenplay for this film as well as the cult classic The Return Of The Living Dead!
