House Of Wax was a big deal in 1953. Promoted well by Warner Brothers, and starring the always smoother then a shot of bourbon Vincent Price, the 3D effects horror film was a commercial success. When Price’s character, Professor Henry Jarrod, doesn’t move quick enough to dissolve the partnership that he and Matthew Burke have formed to run a successful wax museum, Burke gets angry enough to torch the place with Jarrod in it. Burke’s idea is to collect on the insurance. Jarrod fought hard, however, hoping to preserve his precious works of art, especially his beloved wax figure, Marie Antoinette. Burke knocks him out, turns on the gas valves and leaves quickly, knowing what’s coming. The place explodes with Jarrod inside it, but he disappears, believed to be dead. Strange things start to happen after that. Bodies start to disappear from the local morgue. Burke winds up hung from the neck in an elevator shaft, never able to spend all of that insurance money. Also, a local girl’s best friend dies mysteriously and magically shows up in a new wax museum (as Joan Of Arc) run by the disappeared Jarrod. The girl suspects something because the figure looks too real and life-like! If that isn’t enough, she’s also being stalked by a scarred looking guy who wears a black hat and a cape. His face looks like meatloaf. There’s something funny about the figures in the new wax museum; wait until you find out what it is!
