I thoroughly enjoyed this 1973 take on Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, titled here as I, Monster. In this movie, the names are changed from Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde to Dr. Charles Marlowe/Edward Blake which is the great Christopher Lee's role. Peter Cushing plays his understanding lawyer and friend, Frederick Utterson. When Dr. Charles Marlowe creates a serum that alters his personality, he tries in vain to convince his unbelieving friends down at the gentlemen's club about how human nature can be manipulated and changed. At first, Dr. Marlowe injects his cat with the serum, causing such disastrous results in the cat’s nature, that Marlowe brains the kitty to death with a fireplace poker! Then, he tries the serum on himself. At first, his nature is giddy, happy, and carefree. On another occasion, he's mean, rude, and angry. On yet another occasion, he’s deadly and a murderer. Lastly, he descends into madness as he finds out that, even though he put his serum away after killing a girl, he can't keep from turning into Edward Blake at random, where before, it took an injection to produce the evil alter ego. Nobody knows the truth, but Utterson comes dangerously close to putting two and two together and endangering his own life in the process!
