The wonderful surprises about the movie Its Alive is the underrated gem of an actor, John Ryan (Bound 1996, Hoffa 1992, Runaway Train 1985). This guy is one hell of an actor who can drop tears while maintaining a menace that's hard to mistake for anything else. He plays a new father named Frank Davies that gets the shock of his life: his newborn baby is a monster and a killing machine. The thing takes out the whole birthing room staff and escapes, wandering the city and killing indiscrimately. The cops, scientists, and hospital heads are after it to either kill it or study it. Even Frank wants to blow it away and does get some shots in it. The only explanation for how it came to be is the birth control that Frank's (Ryan) wife was taking. Frank's wife, Lenore, has gone off her rocker after the birth, slowly losing touch with reality. This causes problems between her and Frank, who suspects she's hiding something from him! The gore meter for this movie is fairly low, but expect good acting all around to keep your interest up. In fact, what was really scary was the 1970's era living room in Frank's house, complete with plastic over the lampshade, shag carpet, crappy gold curtains, and green paneling.
