Murders In The Rue Morgue Trailer
When The Murders In The Rue Morgue (Rue Morgue as in-street name) was written by Poe before 1841, the detective story wasn't even something anybody had ever heard of. Poe created the detective story; let’s have no more doubt about that fact. No crime novel alive could exist without thanks to Poe! This movie by Universal, however, is a totally different animal from Poe's story. This movie revolves around Bela Lugosi's character, Dr. Mirakle, as obsessing to prove man's link to apes by blood transfers between young women and his ape Erik. Well, since Poe wrote this story 18 years before Darwin's famous book "On The Origin Of The Species (1859)", anybody can see Universal manipulated the story to their benefit. In 1932, when this film was made, Darwinism was as fashionable as anti-fur, no red meat, and saving the whales is today in warped Hollywood. Aside from all of this, the movie stars the great Bela Lugosi as Dr. Mirakle, a mad scientist who does his experiments while making a living showing Erik at carnival sideshows. As he grabs each woman to test their blood to find a "match", he leaves a death trail for the alter-scientist/detective Pierre Dupin to follow, especially after Pierre's girlfriend has been captured by Dr. Mirakle's hairy oaf. A movie fresh off the heels of Lugosi's Dracula (1931), his menacing figure adds the spark of life this weak adaptation needs to even survive.
