I don’t know how I missed the classic Near Dark back in 1987! Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein were fresh from the hit 1986 blockbuster Aliens (Cpl. Hudson and Pvt. Vasquez) and they really sizzle in this film, especially Paxton. This movie is about a pack of traveling vampires who do what they do to survive, that is, drink blood! Paxton is over the top as a homicidal vampire who likes to “play” with his food before he eats it, as witnessed by a tense bar scene. A few things he does is cut the throat of the bartender with the spur on his boot and breaks some dude’s neck, feasting, burping, and proclaiming it “finger licking good”! Paxton was really good in this film. Then there’s Jesse (Lance Henriksen) who plays the menacing head of the clan and who years ago fought in a war in which the South lost! That’s just how old he is. It’s also weird to see an old vampire in a ten year old body which is what Homer is. He’s as calloused, evil, and bloodthirsty as any hardcore convict, however. Don’t let the innocent look fool you! The whole movie centers around a recent induction to the pack that just can’t make his first kill. This enrages the group. They are only going to give Caleb a few more chances. If he doesn’t produce they are going to kill him. Paxton’s character Severen would like to kill him right away and violently! Caleb has a little sister and a loving father on an Oklahoma farm that he loves. If not for being bitten by Mae, a girl that he spotted close to the bar he was in when he went to town, he’d still be there. Anyway, the violent kills that the group makes turn his stomach, so he feeds off of Mae. He won’t last long as a bloodsucker doing that. Events, however, could change for Caleb. I won’t say anymore, except that, if you like vampire flicks, see this tense film. It grabs you and won’t let go, just like an undead creature of the night!
