Director Jeff Broadstreet’s vision of George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead is a weak sister compared to the gloomy, no room for hope atmosphere of the 1968 original. This current Night Of The Living Dead 3D version can’t decide if it’s funny or menacing, so it goes for the in-between and comes off like a limp noodle. Sid Haig can’t even rescue this one even though he’s got the ability to act like your average “aw-shucks” kind of everyman, then turn into a demented nut-bag at the drop of a hat. His part didn’t even exist in the original, but in this one, he’s an owner/operator of a mortuary that’s churning out the walking dead by the hundreds. Haig started the whole mess and now he’s trapped at his pot-smoking neighbor’s farm. The zombies are surrounding the house looking for some grub while picking off family members one by one!
Remember Tom and Judy from the original? They were just two honest, helpful, good kids looking to find a way out of the mess they were in. In this one, Tom and Judy are screwing in the barn when the zombies attack them. Judy runs stark naked out of the barn as the zombies attack and dives into a truck, giving the viewer ample time to completely scan her body, in which she has zero shame. Yes, she was built like a brick shithouse, as my dear old dad would say! This new Tom don’t have half the brains the old Tom had; he runs like a maniac right into a group of zombies trying to get at Judy. Soon, he’s overwhelmed and ate. No hero role for him!
This family grows their own and they just don’t seem to get worked up enough about zombies around and in their house. Too much rope-a-dope I guess! The gore in this one is pretty non-existent although the zombie make-up looks good. The 3D effects were forgettable, scenes like Haig stabbing a shovel into a zombie head…yawn. The funniest one was the same zombie, who started out as the family’s hired hand holding out a huge bomber joint to a jittery Barbara. That thing looked like a rocket coming toward the screen! I’ve seen better zombie films, but for all of those interested, I’ve put a link (upper right) to the Night Of The Living Dead 3D DVD source should you find you’d like to check it out.
