I recall in 1983 that when Psycho 2 was being promoted, everybody was pumped up about this movie. There was speculation as well. Would this movie outshine the original made by Hitchcock or would it fail miserably? Of course there was a lot of hope and excitement because Anthony Perkins was replaying his role as Norman Bates. Also Vera Miles would be in the movie as well playing Lila “Loomis”, previously Lila Crane (sister of Marion Crane) in the original. When I went to the theater to see this film, Anthony Perkins had me spellbound with his creepy Norman mannerisms! The guy was a genius in this role and director Richard Franklin and writer Tom Holland had everybody believing easily that Norman Bates was cracking up again after 22 years in psychiatric care! He’s been released after the events of the first movie into the care of Doctor Raymond (Robert Loggia), a man that’s keeping a close eye on Norman’s reemergence into society. I would’ve had a real problem with releasing him to live back at the old house where his meltdown happened, but hey, the house is one of the main characters here! Perkins will mesmerize you with his boyish charm as he kicks around the house, tormented by past visions and the shaky present. The tension between Norman and the manager that runs his hotel, Mr. Toomey (Dennis Franz), is pretty tight as Toomey pulls out every “loony” and “nut-bag” phrase he can think of to pay back Norman for firing him. Expect some deviousness from Lila Loomis Crane, as she’s totally upset with the authorities for letting Norman out, especially after Norman sliced up her sister in the shower! Meg Tilly performs well as the waitress who befriends Norman at the roadside diner where they both work. Lastly, for the record, that wasn’t Meg’s T & A you see in the standard shower scene! Body double, awwwwww! If you liked the original film, see this one! You won’t be disappointed.
