Sometimes horror movies and their stupid clichés can be aggravating and viewers find themselves shouting at the screen “Don’t go up the stairs!” or “Look behind you!” Scream playfully acknowledges these clichés to make a horror film that is both scary and funny. Director Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and screenwriter Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek) team up to make one of the most creative and entertaining slasher movies of the 90’s. One year after her mother was murdered, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) becomes the target of a serial killer wearing a ghost mask. This may be local reporter Gale Weathers’ (Courtney Cox) chance to prove Cotton Weary’s innocence, the man in jail for the murder of Sidney’s mother. While Gale tries to uncover the identity of the killer, Sidney and her friends are stalked by the crazed killer. -Melissa Helwig

*Melissa Helwig is an intern at Horror Stew and will be a graduate of print journalism at Sheridan College as of May 2007. She currently lives in Oakville, Ontario and loves horror movies, especially slasher flicks.
