If you’ve never seen 1983’s Sleepaway Camp, you’ll find that it’s not just a Friday The 13th knock-off. It stands on it’s own as a mystery/thriller/horror film with a surprise ending that shocked me because I certainly didn’t expect what I seen! It does have it’s comedy moments too, like when Mozart (Willy Kuskin) is tormented by his cabin pals with the old “shaving cream sprayed into his hand while he’s sleeping” trick, then tickling his face to get his hand up there to splatter it all over his mug. Another scene has Mozart bumping his face against another guy’s bare ass in a ribald trick that cracks everybody up with side splitting laughter. Underneath that lays the main story: after a tragic water accident takes the life of a father and one of his children, Angela goes to live with her aunt and her cousin Ricky, a fiery young man fiercely protective of his subdued, quiet cousin. When Auntie sends them off to camp, it doesn’t take long for some mean girls to notice that Angela isn’t right in the head. They start to bully her. The boys get in on the act as well. Then the murders start, one after another. My personal favorite is a hornet’s nest dropped into a bathroom stall where a guy is taking a dump. Unluckily for him, somebody barred the crapper door so he couldn’t get out. Mel, the camp owner, is at his wits end trying to stop the murders before his cash cow is shut down permanently. It takes a while for everybody to realize that screwing with Angela results in a death soon after. Could this doe-eyed girl be actually murdering the other campers? You’ll definitely be freaked in the end!
