The Blob remake is a really good movie with effects that were pretty swell for 1988! This movie, compared to the 1958 original is far gorier with the glob attacking with vengeance anybody that dares fire guns or flame throwers at it. Some of the scenes show a cop that literally gets broke in half as the glob grabs him around the waist and pulls him through some unmoving debris. You’ll also see the fry-chef at a small café get his whole body pulled down a two inch sink drain, turning him into a red slushy. Kids gets ate, old men get consumed, and the scientists that come to quarantine the town get their lights put out permanently by the thing. It’s a fitting tribute to the bio-brains; after all, they created it in a lab! The one person I’m glad the thing didn’t eat was Meg, the heroine (Shawnee Smith) and Brian (Kevin Dillon) the anti-hero bad boy in town. They both get thrown together in the worst circumstances where previously, high school peer groups divided them. They both try hard to convince unbelieving police and parents that the bio-suits are really up to no good with their little (now huge) creation, despite all of the lies that are being fed to the town by them. Yes, this is a high-octane blob on steroids. It’s the real star of this film and doesn’t disappoint!
