There’s something weird about not only the Blob in this movie, but about the small town where the alien lands and wreaks terror in its inhabitants. First of all, the teens, headed by Steve McQueen never use a word worse then “Golly, “Gee Whiz”, or “Gosh!” throughout the whole film. Even one of the cops, losing at the chess game he plays over the radio with another cop from another town says, “shucks”. The cops are strange, too, speaking of them. To them, the teens are just “pranksters” and do nothing worse then racing their cars around a little. These cops in this town aren’t very good investigators either, especially when the Jell-O hits town. They lazily explain it away with no follow-up. In this movie, you never see anybody drunk, knocked-up, say shit, or shoot a cop. Weird! What kind of evil town is this anyway!?!?
Then there’s the alien gelatin. As soon as McQueen starts to convince the cops that there’s a killer monster loose, they don’t believe him. This is where the movie kind of shows the generation gap between the teens and adults. The adults are all clueless, but the teens will “make it all right again”! All of this aside, the movie is a great 1958 classic and a blast from the past. The effects are pretty good for its age. It’s just a great nostalgic movie with post WWII Americana at its best getting shook up when this mass lands and starts to eat people. Steve McQueen did a good job acting in the film; cool as ice like all of his roles.
