The Bride isn’t a bad movie, as some reviewers claim. The 1985 feature starring Sting and Jennifer Beals really had two story lines: Baron Frankenstein and his creation “Eva”, and the other story of the shunned monster and his new friend “Rinaldo” the midget. Rinaldo (David Rappaport) was wonderful as the little man who had a heart of gold, so much so, that he easily overlooks the monster Viktor’s defects and accepts him for who he is. Together, they travel to Budapest to join a circus where Rinaldo expects to find plenty of work there for them both, but soon steals the show with his act. Clancy Brown (The Kurgan in Highlander) is great as the monster. He proves that he isn’t the monster that Frankenstein is. The other story deals with the Baron and the woman he creates. He initially creates her for the monster, but immediately changes his mind as soon as she is up walking around. He wants her. He starts to educate her, lying about how she came to be while presenting her to his rich friends as his ward. The monster and Eva have a telepathic link, though, so Eva suspects something isn’t right and starts to ask questions and investigate who and what she is. This is a PG-13 movie, so I was shocked to see full frontal nudity from Beals (or was it her body double?). At any rate, if it was Beals, she’s more then just a pretty face. Another sad tidbit is that David Rappaport, who played Rinaldo, shot himself to death in 1990. If he were alive, I’d just tell him that I loved his performance and that he was a great actor!
