I think the interesting fact about The Burning 1981 is that the story was created way before a little old film called Friday The 13th! The Burning 1981 had two people involved with the story and screenplay by two dudes named Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who later became the big chiefs of Miramax. You’ll notice some very strong similarities between the two films. Both are set in summer camps and involve maniacs killing lust filled teenagers for something that happened long ago. In The Burning 1981, some angry teenagers that are fed up with a caretaker named Cropsy decide to “scare the shit out of him” by propping a maggot filled skull by his bed as he lay sleeping. As they watch outside the window, Cropsy wakes up, notices the skull (with candles in its eye sockets), and accidently knocks it into his bunk, setting his pants on fire. The fire could probably be easily smothered by a blanket on Cropsy’s bed, but nooooo! This is a horror movie, friend. Not only does Cropsy fail to put out his pants; he’s made the mistake of sleeping in a shack full of gasoline cans used for his grounds work! Cropsy staggers out in a ball of flames and survives. He spends long years in a burn ward nursing sweet revenge on those punks, who incidentally, ran away while Cropsy was cooking. After he gets out, Cropsy wages a one man war against a camp near Camp Blackfoot (the camp where he was caretaker). Cropsy gets busy right away starting with a hooker (scissors stab), then Karen (throat slashed), a slightly frigid girl who can take off all of her clothes for a dip in the lake with a dude but don’t want to even kiss him a little, then a whole raft full of kids searching for their lost canoes (slashed, chopped, stabbed with gardening shears), then the bully Grazer’s sweet lay Sally gets decapitated (garden shears) while Glazer himself gets stabbed through the throat and pinned to a tree (same garden shears!). I believe it’s safe to say Cropsy is pissed. You’ll find out in the end why there were no sequels at the end of this film, The Burning 1981!
