When The Exorcist was released in 1973, it set a new standard for the string of possession movies that followed it, much the same way Romero's Night Of The Living Dead did for other zombie movies. If you haven't seen the original Exorcist movie, please do. Watch it at night....alone. The movie still packs the one-two punch that it had when it came out. It's a story of a young girl living in D.C. who starts showing manifestations of demon possession. At first, her mother, the doctors, and even a priest/psychiatrist (Father Damien Karras) don’t know what the problem with her is. The priest is having some personal problems of his own; an ailing mother that's failing in health and a big one: a crisis of faith. If not for his encounters with Regan, the possessed girl, and her surprising knowledge about his mother, among other things, Father Karras's faith might've taken a huge nosedive. Even with all of the girl's physical manifestations, he still has problems with actual demon possession. With mounting doubt, he calls in the big guns, Father Merrin, and they prepare for the big showdown with Satan!
