I’ve heard that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was actually based on Wisconsin’s Ed Gein and his 1950 nocturnal activities such as digging up corpses and making furniture out of their bones, articles of clothing from their skin, and soup bowls from the skulls. As a matter of fact, police found a shoebox full of genital “cut-outs” that Ed was saving for a rainy day perhaps. Since Tobe Hooper, writer and director, was born in 1943 and the Ed Gein atrocities hit the public mind in 1957 or so, it stands to reason that these nationwide newspaper stories about that madness influenced a young Hooper. Relocate a lot of that to Texas, where Hooper was from and this movie was born!
Five young adults take a little trip in a green van to some family property to look things over. Along the way they run into a mad hitchhiker, whom they meet again later. They kick him out of the van after he cuts the handicapped Franklin with a straight razor. Well, the kids, low on fuel after making it to the property, see a distant farmhouse and in pairs and one by one, walk up there seeking fuel. There they meet Leatherface who picks them off with small sledgehammers to the head, hooks, and his chainsaw. Before some of the kids die, they see a dizzying array of bleached and cleaned bones all over the place. They realize that they’ve run into a group of cannibals who were former meat cutters but have moved on to a more “exotic” meat! This original movie is truly terrifying. I can see that back in 1974 this was a groundbreaking foray into a different kind of horror presentation. Of course, it’s been copied (House Of 1000 Corpses, among others) and this horror franchise has even spawned a bunch of sequels plus been remade recently (haven’t seen it yet). The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a classic in its own right!
