Theater Of Blood is a movie for die hard, hard core fans of Vincent Price, of which I’m one, but since I felt this movie was pretty easily figured out, maybe I’m not as hardcore of a fan as I thought! Well, to be fair, the material Price had to work with was just passable. The movie was too predictable. The whole story is about an actor, a Shakespearean actor named Edward Lionheart, who’s so obsessed with the purity of his acting as it applies to Shakespeare, that he starts a homicidal murdering binge on a group of critics who’ve denied him a coveted gold plated award as the best actor. Shades of Oscar? When the group, called the “Critic's Circle” pick a younger actor for the award over Lionheart, he confronts the wine-sipping, pompous, self-absorbed/self important group and verbally attacks them. When he realizes the extent of their disdain and mirth against him and his acting skills, he jumps off of the balcony to his death. The rest of the movie is totally devoted to the thoughtfully prepared murders (all according, by method, to Shakespeare’s stories) of the “Critic's Circle”. Through it all, Price wails a running commentary of Shakespeare while doing the deeds. Yet, the movie never properly builds up sympathy for Lionheart or true hatred for the critics. The movie also stars the ex-Avenger Diana Rigg, as his yummy daughter in crime, Edwina. Price made better flicks then Theater Of Blood. Pass this one up.
