Twice Told Tales is a 1962 trilogy film with Vincent Price and some really great co-stars like Sebastian Cabot, whom, as you may know, was a great character actor on TV with many memorable roles. He also did voice work for Disney. Cabot shines in tale one of this film as a man who carries love in his heart for his dead fiancée Sylvia for 39 years. One rainy evening while sipping whiskey with his good friend Alex (Price), he notices that the storm has blown the door off of his dead fiancée's tomb. Dr. Heidigger (Cabot), along with a mortified Alex, rush to the tomb to put things right. Sylvia’s coffin is even shifted off of its stone pedestal. As they try to get it back on the pedestal, the lid pops open! Unbelievably, Sylvia looks as fresh as the day they put her in the box! The good doctor and Alex find out it’s all due to the strange rainwater coming into the cave. The story (Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment) really starts to take hold after that with horrifying results!
The second story in Twice Told Tales is called “Rappaccini’s Daughter”, a wicked tale of an overbearing scientist father (Price) who makes his lovely daughter pay the full price of her mother’s infidelity. Rappaccini infuses his daughter with a poison so deadly, that another human being can’t even touch her! Even her father has to wear gloves! The poor girl is in misery, especially after getting noticed by a handsome young man. This complicates things for Rappaccini, but he lovingly intends to make things work for the couple and it’s all due to a strange plant out in the garden!
The third tale in Twice Told Tales is a familiar story by Nathanial Hawthorn called “The House Of The Seven Gables”. Price and crew took some creative license in order to winnow the story down to fit it into this three part film, but it still works! The story is about a brother who’s been away for some time who returns with his wife to The House Of The Seven Gables. His sister is upset with that fact because she’s convinced there’s a vault full of treasure buried in this old house that has a long evil history. His sister wants the treasure and doesn’t want to share it. Price’s character has other ideas, as his sister comes to find out. These three mini films within a film are classic Vincent Price! The sets are very Gothic, Edwardian, and Victorian; sort of like the old Hammer films which make viewing this film a true delight.
