EA.Poe

I believe that Edgar Allen Poe was a clever writer with a different writing style for the times. He uses dashes, commas exclamation marks, etc, constantly.
At present I am writing an essay on 3 of his works which all include death, murder - just violence really.
Some pieces are worrying - I mean where does his inspiration for such irrational and horrific acts come from?
The pieces I am talking about are THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO, THE BLACK CAT and THE TELL-TALE HEART.
One man kills a guy he likes because he doesn't like the old mans eye! - then this dude horrifically hangs a cat, hacks his wifes brains - then throws another cat into a wall cavity! And then another man in another story chains someone to a wall and leaves him to die in some catacombs!
Different - I have come to the conclusion that all characters in these three books are mad and that Poe's heavy drinking fueled the violent side of his stories - either that or he isn't affected by the horrific acts he has written about.
PS. thanks for an informative site on Poe - my essay is all the better for it!
Joke - I'm no copycat.

I too believe that E.A Poe's style and stories are impressive pieces of literature even though it is difficult to grasp their meaning and concept at first.
Insanity, jealously and revenge play heavily in his stories and I agree with your ideas on Poe and his works.
I only found out yesterday that Sir Arthur Conan-Doyles 'Sherlock Holmes' was inspired by Holme's 'C. Auguste Dupin' and that Doyle praised Poe and said of Poe's short stories 'they're a model for all time.'
